Opéra Français de New York
The Mephisto Project (or a Date with the Devil)

Whisper

Mephisto Project is the Faust legend viewed through the eyes of the devil - the original pact, the seduction of Marguerite, the damnation of Faust, and Marguerite's redemption.

Mephisto Project is an examination of the devil persona in French opera - the quintessence of evil in Gounod's Faust, the cynic in Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust, and the rogue in Herve's Le Petit Faust.

Mephisto Project is a meditation on the devil in all of us.

Inspired by the myriad expressions of the devil in French opera, the Mephisto Project is an experimental work combining opera, modern dance, theatre and videography.

In a musical and literary journey through the 19th and 20th centuries, a histrionic Mephisto (based on Gounod's Faust) tries to convince the audience that he is the ultimate incarnation of the Prince of Darkness. But he is constantly interrupted by competing manifestations of the demonic spirit: first by a cynical Mephistopheles adapted from Berlioz's legende dramatique, then by a cross-gender devil out of Herve's opera bouffe. Our Mephisto is reminded that he may not be evil incarnate, but rather one of its many faces. The real goal of the evening appears not to be Mephisto’s claim to Faust's soul, but a competition between demonic rivals for the title of true Master of Hell.

Conceived for two basses, mezzo-soprano, pianist and dancer, the performance combines operatic sequences from Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust, Gounod's Faust, Hervé's Le Petit Faust, solo piano works by Liszt and Ravel, and theatrical monologues from Marlowe, Goethe and Stein. Video and film excerpts (including Marcel Carne's Les Visiteurs du soir) provide a cinematic backdrop to the performance.

Neal Medlyn's Unpronounceable Symbol

Whisper "A QUIRKY AND APPEALING PERFORMER!"
-Charles Isherwood for the New York Times

"A performer of slinky, daring intensity!"
-Gia Kourlas for Time Out New York

"A STREAM OF CONCIOUSNESS STRIP-TEASE…LIKE JIM CARREY ON CAFFEINE, BEING ELECTROCUTED!"
-National Public Radio

Neal Medlyn's Unpronounceable Symbol is his fourth and largest to date pop song tragic-comedic extravaganza. Following the success of his Lionel Richie Opera, R. Kelly cabaret, and wild and bloody spin on Phil Collins, Medlyn takes on the purple, hyper-sexualized world of Prince.

Set to many of Prince's biggest hits and infamous b-sides, all performed onstage by a live band, Neal plays out an evening of seduction and intense internal spiritual conflict between two characters: an engaged cab driver and a messianic libertine. Jealousy, band troubles, violence, death, a dream ballet, decent into hell and the eventual transubstantiation of body fluids and redemption all find their place in an operatic and overblown evening of androgynous musical entertainment.

With contributions from Kenny Mellman of Kiki and Herb, choreographers Carmine Covelli and Adrienne Truscott. There will also be special surprise cameos by downtown luminaries such as Murray Hill and others!

Whisper

WHISPER is a visually decadent, aurally immersive performance that asks the audience to question 'what is real' in a world of increasing technological sophistication. Each audience member is given a set of headphones through which they hear the voices of three live performers narrating a fictional walk through a fictional city. Obscured behind a cinematic screen, the performers are seen as shadows, silhouettes or in stark clarity, creating a fully immersive sound environment to accompany their narration.

Performed by Alice Booth, Gillian Lees, and Andrew Westerside
Music and Sound Design by Philip Reeder. Lighting by Rebecca M.K. Makus

Readymade Dance Theater Company
PURE

pure

PURE, a new dance theater work by Zsolt Palcza, is an excursion into the subterranean currents of the mind.

Three female dancers move through a metaphoric world in a three-sided, 16 x 20 foot white box. Memories slide down walls, emotions twist like oranges, figments jump and hang, thoughts drop like fruit, dreams gasp like mollusks in the sand. The box is bathed in aquatic imagery, giving viewers the feeling of leaving their bodies, suspended in space or floating in water.

The Passion Project

Passion Project

THE PASSION PROJECT is an archival film experiment spun from the reels of the last great silent film, Carl Th. Dreyer’s 1928 immortal masterpiece, The Passion of Joan of Arc. With support from the Danish film Institute and The University of Copenhagen, this performance installation includes every frame Dreyer shot for the film, including reels that were lost to fire like Joan herself. The performance explodes the film into the three dimensions; placing the audience inside the film, sitting next Joan, subjecting them to her interrogators and the relentless rhythm of 30mm film projection. Creative Team: Reid Farrington, Sara Jeanne Asselin, Janet D. Clancy, Austin Guest, Stephen O’Connell, and Shelley Kay. For more information please visit reidfarrington.com
