Union Square Park and Performance Space 122 presents
Summer in the Square

July 26
6:00 pm

Free Admission

Location:
Union Square Park
Broadway to 4th Ave., E. 14 St. to E. 17 St.

Performance Space 122 will present a preview of its upcoming dance season for the Union Square Partnership's Summer in the Square Series on Wednesday, July 26th. Saar Harari, Pavel Zustiak and Chris Yon, three of the choreographers from P.S. 122's 2006/07 season will each present a 15 to 20 minute excerpt of their work.

Saar Harari, will be returning to P.S. 122 this season with his new work entitled Moopim, a follow up to last Fall's Herd of Bulls. Heavily influenced by the time he spent in the army, Herd of Bulls has been described as "intense, muscular and visceral" (culturebot.org). Moopim, which deals less overtly with the army and more with the occupation, focuses on the duality created by trying to live a life of freedom in the same place as those who cannot. It is a section from this piece that will be presented in Union Square.

The Palissimo dance company will be performing an excerpt from next season's Le Petit Mort/Now it's Time to Say Goodbye. The company, which involves not only dancers but a lighting designer, visual designer and dramaturg, led by choreographer/Artistic Director Pavel Zustiak, creates surreal works using lighting, fog, mirrors, video and slides. Zustiak's work has been called "weighted, sensual and loose-limbed. But fierce…" (The Village Voice). In their new piece, Le Petit Mort, the company takes a "look at the small deaths we endure daily, from profound moments…to those insignificant and yet trying moments…"

Chris Yon, who will be working with the Irish Modern Dance Theatre next season at P.S. 122 will be presenting ELEPHANT(terrible) ASSISTED SUICIDE [in ought 6], a duet between him and Taryn Griggs. This 'latter day Buster Keaton' (The Dance Insider) describes his work as "a hybrid of physical slapstick and esoteric postmodern dance." ELEPHANT(terrible) ASSISTED SUICIDE [in ought 6] is a densely-layered, hyper-detailed, urgently-paced duet based loosely on the idea of asking an elephant to dance as a method of suicide.
