Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea
Created by the new British theater company 1927, this show cleverly combines live music, performance and storytelling with films and animations. Using the aesthetic of silent film, a series of comic vignettes unfold in which the performers interact with the animations. Over the course of the evening the perfomers take you to the wild woods and the shipwrecked seas, from the weird underbelly of the suburbs to the tweedy world of the old rich. Hapless cats, marauding gingerbread men and cross dressing devils all make an appearance, not to mention the sinister twins and their misfortunate guests. The show has been compared to Shockheaded Peter, David Lynch and Edward Gorey with a twist of Weimar cabaret. 1927's world is, however, unique to their own highly crafted sensibilities. The Guardian called it "a devilishly good piece of work!", and the Scotsman declared it "A wonderfully surreal step outside everyday life!" Since gaining cult status in London this show has won the 2007 Fringe First Award (from the Scotsman), the Herald Angel Award, the Total Theatre Award for Best Emerging Company and the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award. This is a clean sweep of the top awards at the Edinburgh Fringe. An amazing accomplishment! Between the Devil and the Deep Blue SeaWednesday, January 9th- Sunday, January 27th (No performance Wednesday, January 16th) Tuesday-Friday at 8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays at 5 p.m. with an additional performance Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets (per show) from $20, $15 (students/seniors), $10 (members) ![]() |

Democracy in AmericaDEMOCRACY IN AMERICA PART I As we speak Democracy is on sale. At least in the context of this show. Why? Because everything in this performance can be bought. In fact, we're going further: our entire budget comes from what we sell. The whole event is powered by your purchases. If you don't buy, the set doesn't get built, the lights don't go on, and the actors don't get paid. Furthermore, if you don't buy, there is no performance: no words, no actions, no design, no nothing – just a loooong silence in the dark. With your participation, The Foundry Theatre and Annie Dorsen will premiere DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA at Performance Space 122 from April 1 – 20, 2008. Skeptical? This is how it works... Anything and everything that can be imagined. Buy the inclusion of a strobe light, a song, a dance, a kiss, a cartwheel, a painting, a poster, a video of your high school prom. Maybe you're looking to send a special message to someone you love – or send an even more special message to someone you used to love. Want to warn an audience about an impending ecological disaster? Or perhaps you'd just like to remind us all that Jesus saves. Whether you have a recurring dream that you'd like told to a group of avid listeners, or you're looking for a unique form of advertising, or you'd just like to hear your name mentioned in a play, DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA is the opportunity you've been waiting for. Words, actions, design elements…literally anything that can go into a performance is for sale. And we mean anything. Co-presented by P.S. 122 and The Foundry Theater |
Deganit Shemy's Iodine
The work of Israeli choreographer Deganit Shemy has been leaving New York audiences awestruck for years. It comes as no surprise considering her impressive resume of achievements. Winner of both the Choreography Award and the Gvanim Behmacho contest back in Israel, she is currently an artist in residence at several important studios around the city including the 92nd Street Y and the Tribecca Performing Arts Center where Iodine was developed. Her success comes in large part from her inspiring ability to depict the many powerful conflicts that rule our lives. In Iodine five women move between control and abandon, between being victims and victimizers, as well as between vision and blindness, dependency and individuation. They long to be a part of something larger but also fear losing their identity in the throng. As these sad characters desperately try to evaluate themselves through the reflections of others they find themselves constantly on the precipice of becoming lost altogether. Using her talent for small, meticulous, sometimes awkward movements and deeply emotional choreography Shemy erases the line between motion and emotion. IodineTuesday, February 5th- Sunday, February 10th Tuesday-Saturday at 8 p.m. Sunday at 6 p.m. Tickets (per show) from $20, $15 (students/seniors), $10 (members) ![]() |

Oh, The Humanity and Other Exclamations5 Short Plays by WILL ENO Directed by JIM SIMPSON Starring BRIAN HUTCHISON and CHRISTINA KIRK One of the year's 10 Best Plays! "In Jim Simpson's appropriately spare production, Eno's wittily heartsick dialogue is brought to aching, hopeful life. BRIAN HUTCHISON is a master of subtly shell-shocked candor. (He's like Will Ferrell transposed to a minor key)." — TIME OUT NEW YORK "Will Eno's unmistakable voice—stylized, compassionate, wry—rings out with authority once again in these short plays, POWERFULLY ACTED by BRIAN HUTCHISON. A playful and thoughtful hour of theater about the lonely wilderness inside us all." —THE NEW YORK TIMES For friends of P.S. 122, The Flea is pleased to offer $25 tickets (normally $40) for performances on Tuesday through Thursday at 7pm, and matinees on Saturday at 3pm. Theatre MAMA seeks ACTORS, PERFORMERS, DANCERS, and more for Cirque promo tour
Theatre MAMA seeks ACTORS, PERFORMERS, DANCERS, ACROBATS, GYMNASTS, TUMBLERS, JUGGLERS, MIME CHARACTERS to join the team on the Saltimbanco Bus Tour to theatrically announce the arrival of SALTIMBANCO by Cirque du Soleil to the various cities where the bus will travel in Winter/Spring 2008. For the promotional bus, we are looking for creative people to help us "create a buzz" in each of the cities where the bus will travel. We call our promotions theatrical promotions, in that we hire well-crafted performers to deliver materials to the public in a creative and theatrical manner! Imagine a pair of stilt-walking minstrels around a city’s Downtown area at 5pm to wave goodnight to all of the commuters and leave them with a flier announcing the arrival of SALTIMBANCO by Cirque du Soleil. Imagine a delicate mime character sitting in a grassy park with 30 children around...all wearing clown noses AND smiles. THE SCHEDULE FOR THE BUS TOUR: February 9th 2008 - April 26th 2008 (11 weeks) For the Promotional Bus Tour Characters, we seek performers who see this as an opportunity to perfect their craft for 11 weeks. Candidates must have an amazing theatrical make-up skill and a collection of all white clothing with various bits of accompaniment. Candidates must have a love for “causing a scene” and have a talent for balancing the art of performing and handing out fliers to the public. Finally, the ideal candidate must be comfortable promoting outside on our world’s largest stage, and must be excited about living on a bus for 11 weeks. For sample pics of the last tour of the bus, please visit http://www.saltimbancobus.com, which includes where the bus will travel in its next incarnation. This is a paid gig which requires the utmost professionalism. In addition to being paid, each of our characters will have access to see SALTIMBANCO when our tour meets up with the show tour in various cities. TO EXPRESS INTEREST: To express interest, please send professional photo(s) & description of yourself to talent@theatremama.com for consideration. Please include any work experience if applicable.. |
