Oedipus Loves You
Written by Gavin Quinn and Simon Doyle
"Rough and sneakingly smart...It hits you"
- Ben Brantley, The New York Times
* * * * "The play...the attitude...Pan Pan nails 'em both"
- Helen Shaw, Time Out New York
Oedipus Loves You "approaches the sublime"
- Variety
Pan Pan Theatre's Oedipus Loves You is a wickedly funny and wonderfully theatrical take on the Oedipus plays of Sophocles and Seneca and their legacy, Freudian psychology. These performances - the New York debut of this Dublin-based company - are part of a highly acclaimed world tour following the premiere in 2006.
Pan Pan's punk rock sensibility strikes a fierce chord in this savvy update of Sophocles' classic drama of the ultimate dysfunctional family. They bring decidedly modern twists and ample humour to their explorations yet stay more true to the thrust and themes of the original then you might first think. Oedipus is still counselled by the wise Tiresias, but the sightless sage is now a Freudian analyst and ex-Glam Rocker. Sexual desire runs unchecked and tensions still seethe, but now the backdrop is the barbecue grill of Oedipus's suburban hideaway. Then the psychodynamics are literally amplified as the characters take up rock instruments to channel their rage in live music sessions that are integral to their group family therapy.
From the breakfast table to the back garden barbecue, the seething dramatic tension is ratcheted up by Gavin Quinn's remote-control direction and thrash metal performed live by the five actors, Ned Dennehy, Bush Moukarzel, Gina Moxley, Aoife Duffin and Dylan Tighe. Music by Gordon Is a Mime

Liza Lentini
The Euthanasist
The Euthanasist explores the nature of care giving, devotion and losing one's self in a self-imposed torture of the day to day. Through her diarized testimonial, alongside multi-channeled images, the landscape of one woman's rationale is revealed as she questions her relationship to living and others' desire to die. Told to us compellingly by the mysterious Euthanasist, this theatrical event is certain to stir and provoke.
More about Liza Lentini
Playwright Liza Lentini has been a Playwriting Fellow with the Playwrights Theater of New York (1998) and received a commission from the Alliance of Downtown New York (1998). She is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, such as The Pinter Review Prize for Drama, Trusts Playwrights' Festival, Playwrights First and the Lillian Hellman Prize for Drama. In 2007, Liza was chosen as Manhattan Repertory Theatre's Playwright in Residence. A rising voice in contemporary theatre, her quirky and startling work as been well received in the U.S. and Europe.
The Euthanasist is performed by Monika Schneider, directed by Alan Miller, set design by Adam Dugas, lighting by Diana Kesselschmidt, music by Paul Cantelon.

Rumbles at P.S. 122
Should the Right to Die be made legal?
This is a panel discussion immediately following the 8pm performance of Liza Lentini’s play The Euthanasist, directed by Alan Miller
Speakers confirmed:
Judith Schwarz – Compassion and Choices
Liza Lentini – Playwright, The Euthanasist
Alan Miller – Director, The Euthanasist, and Director, NY Salon
Moderated by – Jean Smith - Director, NY Salon
Euthanasia is illegal throughout the US. However in 1997 Oregon enacted the Death with Dignity Act which allows terminally-ill Oregonians to end their lives through the voluntary self-administration of lethal medications, expressly prescribed by a physician for that purpose. In 2006 alone Compassion and Choices, the nation's largest aid in dying organization, worked with 2,500 new clients across America. In the Netherlands euthanasia was legalized in 2002, with terms such as “mercy killing” and “suicide pill” being used by those both for and against the law. Increasingly, websites promoting assisted suicide have increased, not just for those with terminal illness, but for those that are “unhappy” or suffering from depression.

Opéra Français de New York
The Mephisto Project (or a Date with the Devil)
You have a date with the devil! Inspired by the myriad expressions of the devil's persona in French opera, Mephisto Project is an experimental work combining opera, literature, dance and videography. The evening's program will include scenes from Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust, Meyerbeer's Robert le Diable, Gounod's Faust, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Hervé's Le Petit Faust, and Massenet's Grisélidis.
This production challenges the traditional boundaries between performer and audience, allowing the audience member to become part of the drama. The legend of Mephistopheles will be told through the genius of the French operatic repertory with the counterpoint of dance, video and spoken word as the audience follows the performers in this unorthodox journey to hell and back. Originally conceived and staged by co-artistic directors, Jean-Philippe Clarac and Oliver Deloeuil; lighting design by Rick Martin.
The Mephisto Project (or a Date with the Devil)
June 19 and 20
Everynight at 8:00 pm
Tickets from $30, $25 (for under 25s and P.S. 122 members)

Neal Medlyn's Unpronounceable Symbol
"A QUIRKY AND APPEALING PERFORMER!"
–Charles Isherwood for the New York Times
"A performer of slinky, daring intensity!"
–Gia Kourlas for Time Out New York
"A STREAM OF CONCIOUSNESS STRIP-TEASE…LIKE JIM CARREY ON CAFFEINE, BEING ELECTROCUTED!"
–National Public Radio
Neal Medlyn's Unpronounceable Symbol is his fourth and largest to date pop song tragic-comedic extravaganza. Following the success of his Lionel Richie Opera, R. Kelly cabaret, and wild and bloody spin on Phil Collins, Medlyn takes on the purple, hyper-sexualized world of Prince.
Set to many of Prince's biggest hits and infamous b-sides, all performed onstage by a live band, Neal plays out an evening of seduction and intense internal spiritual conflict between two characters: an engaged cab driver and a messianic libertine. Jealousy, band troubles, violence, death, a dream ballet, decent into hell and the eventual transubstantiation of body fluids and redemption all find their place in an operatic and overblown evening of androgynous musical entertainment.
With contributions from Kenny Mellman of Kiki and Herb, choreographer David Neumann, Carmine Covelli and Adrienne Truscott.

Whisper
WHISPER is a visually decadent, aurally immersive performance that asks the audience to question ‘what is real’ in a world of increasing technological sophistication. Each audience member is given a set of headphones through which they hear the voices of three live performers narrating a fictional walk through a fictional city. Obscured behind a cinematic screen, the performers are seen as shadows, silhouettes or in stark clarity, creating a fully immersive sound environment to accompany their narration.
Performed by Alice Booth, Gillian Lees, and Andrew Westerside
Music and Sound Design by Philip Reeder. Lighting by Rebecca M.K. Makus

Readymade Dance Theater Company
PURE
PURE, a new dance theater work by Zsolt Palcza, is an excursion into the subterranean currents of the mind.
Three female dancers move through a metaphoric world in a three-sided, 16 x 20 foot white box. Memories slide down walls, emotions twist like oranges, figments jump and hang, thoughts drop like fruit, dreams gasp like mollusks in the sand. The box is bathed in aquatic imagery, giving viewers the feeling of leaving their bodies, suspended in space or floating in water.
