Dark Horse/Black Forest at The Gershwin Hotel

- Gia Kourlas, The New York Times

"Castro's upcoming duet takes voyeurism to a precipice... it doesn't happen on a stage but in a bathroom like yours." -Lori Ortiz

A special Dance Installation: Space is Limited, Book in Advance

DARK HORSE/BLACK FOREST is an intense love story presented in the most intimate space: a bathroom. The lobby bathroom of The Gershwin Hotel will be transformed by an installation of flourescents, mirrors, and video screens for this exclusive boutique performance. The audience is privy to an emotional and private exchange between a couple that evolves into a formal, sensual dance. There are two casts that rotate bi-weekly: a man and a woman (Heather Olson & Joseph Poulson), and two men (Luke Miller & Darrin Wright).

Heather Olson & Joseph Poulson:
June 5-7, 12-14

The AMORALISTS
The Pied Pipers of the Lower East Side

amoralists

"'The Pied Pipers of The Lower East Side is the most exciting theatre I've seen in quite a while. The Amoralists are making theatre here that really does have the capacity to lead their audience towards some meaningful social change." - NYtheatre.com

An extraordinary gathering of young idealists live as a modern day urban tribe above a vegan restaurant in NYC. Billy, Dawn, Dear and Wyatt are an extended sexual family battling their fears and addictions in order to live their utopian dream. The Pied Pipers of the Lower East Side is a celebration of love and the search for human grandness.

The AMORALISTS is a theatre company that produces work of no moral judgment. Dedicated to an honest expression of the American condition, our actor-driven ensemble explores complex characters of moral ambiguity. We seek to initiate a dialogue between artists and audience, putting theatre at the heart of our community. Rollicking, rebellious, and raw, our work will go home with you...Boom!

Sam Kim
Darling

darling

"Ms. Kim is a smart, analytical artist, creating works that challenge personal and cultural assumptions... her choreography, often drawing on deeply personal experiences, relies on a gripping, dreamlike logic." - Claudia La Rocco, The New York Times

WORLD PREMIERE

Darling is a black comedy disguised as a horror film disguised as a dance. Inspired by the genre subversion and dysfunctional family dynamics of the 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' Darling exposes killers, cannibals, half-wits and the sexually demented for who they really are - monsters with extraordinary human qualities who must put up with the shaming and nagging of their insufferable families, just like everyone else. Darling answers the burning question, "What do butchers and cannibals do in their off-time? And, how do they do it?" Darling is essentially the story of family - necessary, painful, horrific, and ultimately laughable.

Performed by Inka Juslin, Sam Kim, Ryan McNamara, and Liz Santoro

Sam Kim makes dances that focus on the margins of culture and behavior, creating space for vulnerability while courting danger. Since 2002, Sam has created dumb dumb bunny (The Kitchen, 2007), Cult (Dance Theater Workshop, 2007), AVATAR (Mulberry St Theater, 2006), Nobody Understands Me (Dance Theater Workshop, 2004), Placid Baby (Performance Space 122, 2003) and Valentine (Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, 2002). She has created several shorter works since 1997.

undergroundzero

The undergroundzero festival is an experimental theatre festival curated by Paul Bargetto, the Artistic Director of East River Commedia, and Collective:Unconscious, a long time presenter of cutting edge performance.

At the heart of the festival is a question asked of every artist: What would you make if you could make anything you wanted? Our mandate is to select artists, not projects. We trust the artist to make his or her own creative choices. In exchange for this trust we expect radical experimentation and the courage to risk everything. This year undergroundzero will present fifteen full productions and five staged readings on both stages of Performance Space 122.

"It's hard to justify seeking any other form of entertainment on your Saturday night."-Claudia La Rocco , The New York Times

"Would you totally go out and see some of the underground artsy dancing and acting that New York offers so much of, if only you had an ironclad guarantee that the performance wasn't going to be boring and sucky? Well, today is your lucky day." - Emily Gould, Gawker.com

Conceived by Brendan Kennedy and presented by Neal Medlyn and Catch in association with Performance Space 122, the evening-length performance will feature work by a vast array of downtown superstars showing pieces inspired by each song from the album, much as the Joffrey Ballet's (in)famous Billboards choreographed the songs of Prince.

One more chance to make a difference...

June 2009

Dear Friends,

It has been a remarkable season.
Over the course of the 2008-09 season, Performance Space 122

  • Presented over 40 companies and artists,
  • Supported over 500 performing artists, choreographers, playwrights, directors, musicians, designers and technicians,
  • Premiered over 40 new shows in 500+ performances, and
  • Welcomed close to 25,000 audience members.
In addition, we were able to produce a wonderful Spring Benefit - "Real Dancing with the Real Stars." - It was a great evening that reminded us that Performance Space 122 has been a cultural treasure for close to 30 years.

Through your support, your donations - from near and from afar - and your presence, we have produced another amazing season. At the same time, this has been a very challenging year financially.

The economic downturn has had a significant effect in 2008-2009. In response to reductions in individual gifts and government and private foundation funding we made significant budget cuts at mid-year. And we did so without reducing our commitments to our artists. For the most part, we have weathered the storm this year, with one very important challenge remaining.

Although we are close, we have not yet reached financial "break-even" this fiscal year. We are $50,000 away from achieving this. This is vital to maintain stability going forward in these unpredictable times.

As the curtain descends on our fiscal year (June 30, 2009) we have received an incredibly generous dollar-for-dollar matching gift from a Friend of Performance Space 122 and, thereby, a real opportunity to break even this fiscal year.

Thanks to a Friend of Performance Space 122, for every $1 you donate on or before June 30, 2009, Performance Space 122 will receive an additional $1 from our donor, up to $25,000.

Our goal is to raise $25,000 in contributions by TUESDAY, June 30th
in order to receive every dollar of this matching gift. Can you please help us make this happen? No gift is too small. We ask you to give whatever you can and help us meet this goal.

Take Action now and click here to make a donation

We know that many of you recently supported our Spring Benefit and that many of you have made contributions to us at various times this year. We know many of you come to our performances. We appreciate all that you have done. And we hope you can manage to give once more.

Thank you. We hope you can help us. Best wishes for a happy summer from everyone here at Performance Space 122.
