And now for something completely different...as a preshow experience on each night of the Old School Benefit, conceptual live art and installation specialists PRAXIS will lead small groups, just like a traditional museum guide would, into a typically off-limits room in PS122 to view the portraits of ghosts. The art however is not visible, but rather a description of the ghost.
FAQs
What is a ghost portrait?
It is visual art, it is conceptual art. When you own a portrait of a ghost by Praxis, you get three things- a card in the mail to put on your wall describing the ghost so you can tell visitors yourself what the ghost portrait is. A letter of authenticity, and, you will get your name in a pdf catalog about the show.
Is it a performance?
No, it is visual art that is non-visible and you are collecting it. There is a physical tour of the ghosts at PS122, but that is separate, just as a tour of traditional art in a museum is not the same as owning one of those artworks in your home.
Is it Nothing?
No, it is something. Just as Sol LeWitt sold instructions for drawings, and Tino Sehgal is selling a set of directions to his performative events, Praxis is selling descriptions of artworks that are visual, ownable, and resellable.
What is the Non-Visible Museum?
It is a way to show non-visible works. By giving a tour, in the flesh, of a space that is empty, and describing visual art, we build a non-visible museum.
