A call for lost memories...
re:placement is an interactive art project: a call for lost memories in the form of videos and images for video artist Andrew Schneider. After all, if you didn't shoot it, write it down or put it in a box, it didn't happen.
Please post video, photos, text and links to this facebook event page, which becomes an online ongoing installation.
The installation will be featured offline and "in person" at PS122 Sep 18-19 as part of Avant-Garde-Arama.
On June 21st The Apartment building at 493 Myrtle Avenue fully collapsed destroying everything inside. The residents were unharmed, but lost all of their possessions. They ran from the building with only the clothes on their backs and the toothbrushes in their mouths. Their furniture was destroyed. Their clothing was destroyed. Their appliances. Books. Music. Phones. All of their writing. Every picture they evey took. Notes. Letters. Cards. Gifts. Artifacts of the past. The physical, real world documentation of their memories is gone.
"I used to be a resident of 493 Myrtle and lost all of my stuff. And to tell you the truth, it's been nice to not have stuff. I actually don't want my stuff back. And while I appreciate the overwhelming and infinitely generous offers to replace the things that I've lost, I especially don't want the stuff that other people don't want. But what I have lost that I miss are my memories. Those are things that I cannot get back. So instead of asking for a donation of used furniture, or cutlery, or alarm clocks and old towels and clothes, I am asking for memory donations."
-Andrew Schneider
Individuals are asked to submit intimate personal memories in the form of the documentation of these memories. Memories can include, but are not limited to:
high school love notes
childhood home videos
journal / diary entries
prom pictures
scrapbook items
other items of nostalgia
These memories will be used in the creation of a new short performance as well as physical installation as part of PS122's Avant-Garde-Arama in September.
The form can vary, however I ask that if at all possible, you submit an original documentation of that memory.
That way it is an actual donation. Something that you have that someone else does not. It is of value. And you are willing to part with this only because someone else is in need.
Feel free to let your mind wander. Include a description, or don't. Submit with a back story or completely anonymously or with special instructions. Your donation can take any form and is up to you.
You are encouraged to submit videos, pictures, letters, communications, journals, etc in physical form by dropping things off at Performance Space 122
Between 10am - 6pm Monday - Friday (starting after Labor Day) to the attention of Adam McGowan or Andrew Schneider.
In addition you are encouraged to submit them electronically.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION via FACEBOOK:
1. Join the PS122 Group and RSVP to this event.
2. Upload your donated memories in the form of Videos, Images, Links, and Comments.

PS122 Seeks House Monitors:
-
For the Oct/Nov production of
Kurt Henschlaeger's ZEE
Presented by Future Perfect in association with Performance Space 122
Produced in New York by 3LD Art & Technology Center
Commitment:
Oct 24-27 Training: approx 2 hrs. per day
Oct 28 - Nov 15: 20 hours per week
Show Schedule is Wed - Fri 5PM - 10PM, Sat 2PM - 10PM and Sun 12PM - 6PM
For more information or to volunteer to be a House Monitor for ZEE at 3LD Art & Technology Center - Please email Ian at ianbrill@gmail.com
Prerequisites:
House Monitors for ZEE must be comfortable interacting and communicating with people on a practical, informative and preventative level. They must be able to maintain their composure under unusual conditions. Monitors must be comfortable working in an environment where there will be virtually zero visibility as well as be able to carry out their duties within such disorienting environment. Monitors will be exposed to intense sound and a thick, dense artificial fog. Neither the sound level nor fog level poses any health risk though. Maneuvering inside the fog, physical contact, e.g. bumping into somebody, might be experienced.
General Warning for everybody before entering ZEE:
To attend or participate in ZEE it is not advised and can be dangerous for anybody with a history of epilepsy, respectively so called photosensitive epilepsy. Due to the immersive nature of ZEE several phenomena linked to photosensitivity, like a feeling of seasickness or motion sickness, as well as trance like states and blackouts can be experienced in various degrees. Further, in regards to the fog, people suffering from asthma, breathing and heart problems, abnormal blood pressure, migraine & headaches, eye & ear diseases, people suffering from claustrophobia or anxiety should absolutely not attend the installation. Pregnant women and children are also advised to refrain from attending.
Tasks:
1) Informing visitors about the nature of the work and asking about preexisting conditions that may cause a health conflict for an individual when entering ZEE, without causing them unwarranted anxiety. In some cases the warnings themselves will cause people to develop anxiety. In these cases, these people should not be encouraged to enter. Instead, extra effort must be made to ensure that they are comfortable and relaxed before being allowed entry.
2) Guiding people through ZEE is an essential challenge. Visitors will have to be escorted into ZEE and the monitor has the initial task of communicating with them until it seems that everyone will be comfortable inside the space. Guests are encouraged to hold on to the ropes until this time, move along them into the space and to not let go unless they are completely confident. At this point in time it is the task of the monitor to find a realistic balance between allowing the individuals to experience ZEE for themselves, but also continue to monitor them and the environment for their safety. Monitors are required to stay inside of ZEE for the duration of each showing, in order to assist guests if necessary. Finally, once the show ends, it is the task of the monitor to make sure that each individual is accounted for and has safely exited ZEE.
